The Maths Department

TThe Math’s Department follows the White Rose Scheme of work. . this is a scheme of work that focusses on mastery and reasoning. The 'Small Steps' ensure the students are able to fill any gaps in their knowledge.

Key Stage 3

At Egerton High School our Key Stage 3 curriculum is taught, around a theme-based approach which captures the interest of our students. The themes support students in understanding why they need to build on their basic maths skills and understand the links with the world around them. Students are able to make progress extending their basic skills, while securing and extending their understanding of maths concepts, enabling them to work towards achieving their GCSEs. Students are supported in lessons by staff and will often work on the same topic but work at different levels, dependent on their individual needs. Independence is encouraged and developed throughout, so students become more confident preparing them for the transition to Key Stage 4.The autumn Term theme is ‘British Heroes’ and in maths we are focusing on British heroes in maths, having discussions in class about who they were and what they did. For example, Alan Turing and the work he did with coding.

Key Stage 4

In Key Stage 4 all students use the concepts they have mastered and apply them, working towards achieving their maths GCSE. We are currently following the AQA GCSE Mathematics (8300) specification. All students are entered for GCSE at the end of year 11. In year 10 all students complete the OCR Entry Level Certificate where they are awarded level 1, 2 or 3. Throughout Key Stage 4 students will complete mock exams to prepare them for their final exams in year 11.
