The statement of governance:

The governing body at Egerton High School has a full membership, with a wide variety of members. They bring with a them wide range of knowledge, skills and expertise from legal backgrounds to business, finance, and education.

As a result, they provide very effective support and challenge to the headteacher and his staff. Governors are regular visitors to the school. They ask for a demanding level of material from the Headteacher in his reports.

They have a particular focus when they visit and report their findings back to the relevant committee. Each Governor has Link Governor accountabilities and liaises regularly with school to monitor key aspects of the schools’ practices/policies in action. They provide succinct reports for the GB which are then shared at Committees or FGB meetings

Governors are well informed about academic and personal and social outcomes. They also track performance of those supported by PPG funding (see the PPG Governor reports)

Governors regularly track, the activities of the Attendance Officer in her attempts to achieve the best attendance possible, and frequently contribute ideas and support.

School policies are regularly discussed, reviewed and updated with governors according to appropriate timescales.

Governors are well informed about the quality of teaching, learning and assessment.

The Governing Body undertake a skills audit and attend training courses when necessary to ensure that they have, as a whole, the appropriate mix of skills in order to efficiently undertake its functions.

I’m proud to serve as a governor and bring my experience and passion for education to this role. I am currently the Headteacher at Kingsway Primary School and have worked in education for over 30 years, with the last 20 years in senior leadership. My career has taken me across a range of settings, including specialist provision, and across both Trafford and Manchester.

As a Specialist Leader in Education for SEND, I’ve supported schools in embedding inclusive practice and ensuring equitable access for all children. I believe every child deserves the opportunity to thrive, and I am committed to helping schools create environments where this is possible.

I am passionate about improving the lives of young people and, as a governor, I aim to support the school in enriching opportunities and experiences for every child. Working together, we can make a real difference.

Tom Smith - Governor

I work at Huddersfield New College within the Faculty of Health and Sport, where I hold a leadership role focused on curriculum quality, staff development, and improving student outcomes. I am keen to serve on the Governing Body as I value the role governors play in providing both support and appropriate challenge. I have a strong interest in strategic decision-making, safeguarding, staff development, and ensuring that pupils’ wellbeing and achievement remain central to school improvement. I am committed to working collaboratively with fellow governors and school leaders to support the long-term success of the school and its community.

Andy Brooks - Governor

I manage George Carnall Community Hub. The Hub is a key partner of the school, as it hosts the sixth form amongst other activities. It is both my personal view and professional obligation that there is a provision for all within local communities, especially those that are marginalised. I want to help the school embody this. I have lived experience of special needs from within my family and want to use the opportunity as a school governor to help guide and shape the school and its systems.

Get Started

Ian Bennett - Staff Governor

I have been a staff governor for over five years and have worked in the SEMH sector for more than thirteen years, gaining extensive experience in supporting pupils with social, emotional, and mental health needs while contributing strategically to school leadership. I am the Head of Curriculum and lead our post-16 provision, overseeing curriculum design and development to ensure high-quality, inclusive pathways that meet the diverse needs of learners and prepare them for future education, employment, and independence. I was a professional football player at Manchester City, and I am keen to use my experience to give back to young people by inspiring them, promoting positive values, and supporting their personal development through education, sport, and mentorship.

Elaine Cannon - Governor

I feel privileged to have been appointed as a governor for this amazing school. I am passionate about education and am a life-long learner, so I bring a range of varying skills and experience to the team. I live in Trafford with my husband - my two grown up children having flown the nest.

I studied French, German and European studies in Dublin and started my career at the European Commission in Brussels where I worked in research and development and then in the cabinet for the external affairs commissioner.  A move to the UK afforded me the opportunity to start my own language recruitment business which I ran successfully for a number of years.   Due to my passion for education and learning,  I undertook a primary PGCE with French language and worked as a primary school teacher for 13 years - a job I loved.  A lifelong interest in holistic wellbeing brought about a change in career in 2023 when I qualified as a clinical reflexologist.   I now run a busy practice from home and also volunteer at my local hospice.   In my spare time I like to go to the gym and walk my two dogs.  I am an avid reader and run a monthly reading group.

I am passionate about every child being “the best they can be” and having every opportunity to thrive.  I am really looking forward to my role and making a difference to the pupils at Egerton.
