The Hive, Egerton High School’s specialist KS3 Nurture department.

What is Nurture?

Nurture environments offer a safe, comfortable, home-like environment, with clear routines and adults who model positive relationships, in line with nurture group principles.  Curriculum specialists deliver lessons to students within their Nurture bases, whilst specialist subjects are delivered in well-equipped practical learning environments. With the aid of Boxall Profile assessments, staff set pupils personal targets and give them a range of strategies to help them to improve their behavioural, emotional and social skills.

By supporting the SEMH needs of students, we can help ensure that pupils make accelerated academic progress or to feel capable of restarting it when it has stalled. Over time, we are able to significantly modify pupils’ behaviour, improve social and emotional skills and improve pupils’ attendance.

The Six Principles Of Nurture

 1.       Children's learning is understood developmentally

2.       The classroom offers a safe base

3.       The importance of nurture for the development of wellbeing

4.       Language is a vital means of communication

5.       All behaviour is communication

6.       The importance of transition in children's lives

The Conway Centre.

In November, Years 7 and 8 spent three days on a residential trip to the Conway Centre in Wales, during which they worked hard to develop their confidence and their ability to work collaboratively with one another. Students had the opportunity to participate in indoor and outdoor climbing, mountain biking, orienteering, canoeing and assault courses and represented our school exceptionally throughout. We look forward to visiting them again next year.

Year 7 reflective writing on the residential trip, March 2019:

“I had a really good time on the trip. It was so fun to stay in a room with all of my mates. The trip helped me because sometimes I get nervous in new places and being around loads of people. My favourite activity was going on the mountain bikes.’’

Year 6 Transition Visits

In May, Egerton High School welcomed our future Year 7 students for the day, so that they were able to experience their new high school ahead of their transition in September. The visit was supported by our Student Leadership Team and current Year 7 students. The Year 6 students enjoyed a day of activities from subjects across our varied curriculum.

Chester Zoo

Egerton have recently begun an exciting collaboration with Chester Zoo. The first project is focused on Orangutans and Palm Oil, learning more about sustainable fuel. We want our students to take an interest in the world around them and know that they are important and can have an impact on the planet.

More exciting projects with Chester Zoo to come!
