Careers
This information is for teachers and the families of Egerton High School.
Egerton High School works very closely with a number of industry and Post 16 providers, including The Manchester College, Trafford College, The Greater Manchester Skills Company, and Trafford Housing Trust. The School also supports students in their career choices from an early age.
Careers education and guidance starts in Year 7 with the introduction of the STEPS programme, this continues throughout their time at Egerton High School. Each year group every Spring Term will complete individual workbooks that takes them through the stages of career planning relevant to each year group. This continues through Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4.
In Year 10, we conduct group careers interventions via discussions during Personal and Social Education: the focus is on how important the remainder of their time at school is, how they have to concentrate and work hard in every lesson to try and reach their full potential, working towards achieving good GCSE grades and qualifications in all subject areas. Students also have the opportunity to compile their own Curriculum Vitae (CV) and attend a Mock Interview with our Career Enterprise Advisor. This year we have been able to offer work place visits through Trafford Housing Trust. Students will have the chance to experience different work places, understanding the variety of different journeys and career options available to them before they leave school in Year 11.
In Year 11, we intensify our focus even further. Here, individualised interventions take place, discussing interests, college and post 16 provisions for Post 16 placements. Students have the opportunity to visit post 16 at Manchester College, Trafford College and The Greater Manchester Skills Centre. The visits are tailored to explore their vocational interests. The visits take place during the school day and are arranged so that students can explore the environment, see the facilities and meet with tutors. Students in year 11 have been able to visit a work place with our School Partnership through Trafford Housing Trust. In year 11 students have the opportunity to attend a Mock Interview with our Careers Enterprise Advisor. During the Mock Interview they also gain constructive feedback on their CV’s. We send out college open day events leaflets to students’ family homes to encourage families to attend the events to meet with course tutors. Students then have the opportunity to complete a Preparation for Work unit within their Level 1and Level 2 ASDAN Qualification in Personal and Social Development (PSD), which is equivalent to a GCSE. Within the curriculum it addresses areas of preparation for adulthood, such as, banking, budgeting, accommodation, wage slips and how they work, basic Cooking Skills, Health and Safety in the work place and at home. The Careers Adviser supports students in processing their college or provider application and in conducting interviewing techniques. The School not only supports students with college and provider enrolments in the summer break, but also support pupils once they have left, helping them maintain their placements effectively.
Connexions report.pdf
Students at Egerton High School receive an active careers programme through many of their curriculum encounters from Year 7 through to Year 11. All young people should be able to access a careers programme whilst following the Gatsby Benchmarks, helping to raise aspirations and to promote the best possible careers education, information, advice and guidance.
To build on our stable careers programme we are wanting to increase employer encounters and to strengthen our links with local employers. We are pleased to introduce our Enterprise Advisor, Kirsty Munro, The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero We also now have our own Careers Link governor Janet Ainsworth who is a local business woman. Having key links with local employers and with the guidance of Diane Norburn our Careers Enterprise Co-ordinator we are looking to continue developing our Careers Programme through the current year to improve on our already good Gatsby Benchmarks as assessed with the Compass Tool.
